The Function of Behavior

All behavior happens for a reason!

Behavior is a form of communication. By understanding the function of behavior, we can teach more effective and positive ways to meet the same need.
Attention

“Look at me!”

The behavior happens to get attention from others (e.g., adults, peers).

Child raising arms to get attention
Example: A child screams when a parent is on the phone.
Escape

“I want a break!”

The behavior happens to avoid, escape, or end a non-preferred task, demand, or situation.

Child covering ears at a desk to escape schoolwork
Example: A child throws materials to avoid doing schoolwork.
Access to Tangibles

“I want that!”

The behavior happens to get something preferred (e.g., toy, food, iPad, activity).

Child reaching for a toy car on a shelf
Example: A child hits to get a toy.
Automatic

“It feels good!”

The behavior happens because it is internally reinforcing, such as providing sensory input or relief.

Child sitting calmly with a self-soothing pose
Example: A child rocks or flaps hands because it is calming.
