Academic and School Support

Build skills that make learning more accessible

ABA academic support targets the skills a child needs to participate in learning activities. We begin by understanding the task, the child's current abilities, and the support that helps them succeed.

Step 1 · Learning

Support for learning routines

Goals may include starting a task, following directions, organizing materials, taking manageable breaks, requesting help, completing work in smaller steps, and developing independence during homework routines.

When appropriate to the learner and provider's competence, teaching may also address foundational skills such as matching, sorting, letter or number identification, and early concepts. We use clear steps and adapt practice based on the child's response.

  • Starting a task
  • Following directions
  • Organizing materials
  • Manageable breaks
  • Requesting help
  • Homework independence
Step 2 · Participation

Plan for participation

We consider whether tasks are too difficult, too long, unclear, or missing necessary supports. Strategies may include visual schedules, choices, shorter work periods, task breakdown, and gradual increases in independence.

  • Visual schedules
  • Meaningful choices
  • Shorter work periods
  • Task breakdown
  • Gradual independence
  • Right-sized supports
Step 3 · School

School collaboration

With caregiver consent and school approval, collaboration may include reviewing relevant goals, discussing classroom strategies, participating in meetings, or arranging an observation. We focus on practical supports for communication, transitions, safety, and learning participation.

School access and observation arrangements depend on the school's requirements. We clarify consent, scheduling, and the scope of consultation before proceeding.

  • Goal review
  • Classroom strategies
  • Meeting participation
  • Observation (when approved)
  • Communication supports
  • Transition and safety
Step 4 · Shared goals

Shared goals and useful information

We can help caregivers identify priorities to discuss with the school and communicate relevant observations from ABA services. Decisions about school programming remain with the appropriate school team and family.

  • Family priorities
  • Useful ABA observations
  • Clear communication
  • School team decisions
